Hill Top: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Keep the motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Around Hill Top, catching it before the motor runs usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot. Here in advance? Then the rest covers how it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Diesel goes to your motor — but many modern diesels seen round Hill Top and Kitchenroyd carry a second liquid as well. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.
Separate tanks, separate fillers. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. The mistake lives in that gap.
Hill Top: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Hill Top Terrace, or on the way home in the car park at Scissett Working Men's Club.
Then your car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started. Whether it happens in Clayton West or the middle of Hill Top, it's the same few seconds.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Nether End or a forecourt in Hill Top, check these. They take a couple of seconds.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show which goes in which filler just there.
- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Denby Dale? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
When the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire, use this routine.
- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of High Street.
- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read the cap.
- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.
- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.
Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Stage five is out.
Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hill Top already?
Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.
Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else. If you're on your own drive around Hill Top, leave the vehicle where it sits.
Already started? Stop when it's safe, then switch off. Hill Top lies under 3 miles from the M1; there, use the next junction. About how far did it go? Crossing Hill Top is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles towards Wakefield, so tell us.
Hill Top: what takes place when our engineers arrive
Wherever your car has stopped, be it outside Kaye's Academy, beside All Saints or on your own drive, the van travels to it. Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — which fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so we ask. On the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.
The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is cleared. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it counts more. A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.
Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

AdBlue drains in Hill Top and across West Yorkshire
Hill Top is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, Scissett and High Hoyland among them, across the HD postcode area. Fastest of all: give a HD8 9 postcode for the van.
Shifting the vehicle is not needed. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Whistlestop Valley, a lay-by on the way to Cliffe Wood Park, a drive. Tricky to pin down, like the back of Wakefield Road Methodist Church? By a border? Asking beats guessing, so phone.
Hill Top drivers: the short version
Pour nothing until you've read the cap. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
