AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Hillam? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once your pump starts drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hillam, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has run. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hillam: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can know.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting LS25 5, or simply the name of a street close by, so phone from the car.

Never do these:

  • No starting the motor — not briefly, not to reposition the car.
  • Switching the key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's pointless.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way down Lumby Hill.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Moving the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Hillam forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its supply from. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Birkin yesterday and never switched on stays the simple one, as long as nobody touches your key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out. Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle parked in Hillam. Only inside that tank, it stays stable. Then there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Morrisons, and this issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Hillam or out in South Milford, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in North Yorkshire the car sits.

Hillam: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Monk Fryston Church of England Primary School. A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Hillam Lane, as the day ends. Otherwise, in dim light by Cross Keys Inn, your car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Hillam or the rest of North Yorkshire.

Hillam: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from Hillam & Monk Fryston Cricket Club, or part way across Hillam, your engine may go rough, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or cut out. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of testing it again. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the A1(M), under 3 miles from Hillam, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, so driving for Wakefield, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Hillam to the car park by St Wilfrid's. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped. When it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Hillam: what it takes

The car stays put, whether that's a road near Burton Salmon Village Hall, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Hillam, and the van travels to it. Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about the amount, plus whether the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when your tank is emptied, right there. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel. Whether it's a parking bay by South Milford or a drive around Hillam, that is where our technicians start the car and you drive off. It's checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before we leave. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Hillam

Since the jobs differ, a single price would not be fair. The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Burton Salmon War Memorial.

What went in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Hillam enquiry opens with exactly those, before any figure, never after. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
