Hillside: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

All of that hinges on a single fact: whether the engine has started after the AdBlue went in — more than anything else. Over in North Craigo or right around Hillside, an unstarted motor must remain unrun. Ring 0333 366 0103 with your ignition and engine both off. Across Hillside, that is generally emptied and flushed on the spot. If it has run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. It's a bigger job, yet step one doesn't change.

Further down: the situations our engineers meet, anywhere in Angus. Choose yours.

Hillside forecourt: AdBlue in a diesel at the pump

Only now, nozzle yet in your hand, it dawns on you that the cap you opened was the wrong one, right at the pump. Anywhere around Hillside, then — Asda, BP, or anywhere else nearby.

The upshot: of all places to notice, the forecourt is the best. The AdBlue is inside your tank and nowhere else. Nothing has drawn it in.

What to do: don't get back in and fire it up to clear the petrol pump. Ring us from the forecourt once the vehicle sits in a space — the attendants will help push it — then save the receipt. If it can't be moved, it can be drained at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Hillside

On your dash, a warning had been lit all week. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the driveway, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look once more at the cap. It occurs on driveways just off Loan Dykes as frequently as anywhere.

The upshot: no driving since leaves this nearly as good to spotting it at the pump. As it is unable to mix, AdBlue drops to the base inside that tank and stays. A night standing changes nothing.

Put your keys indoors overnight — otherwise someone might take it off first thing — then call us. Borrowfield or Hillside: wherever your driveway sits, that is where it gets drained. Night-time empties beside a house are fine: the pumps are quiet.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Hillside

On the road around Hillside with AdBlue in a diesel

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power or a lit dashboard arrived a mile or two beyond the top-up. It might have been driving to Dundee, under 50 miles away, or simply down Main Road.

Meaning? Your fuel pump has sucked the AdBlue in. Mileage sets how far it gets: filter and lines to begin with, then the high-pressure pump and every injector. Each restart, like each mile, pushes it on.

What to do: pull over where it is safe and switch off. On the M90, under 50 miles from Hillside, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Do not restart the car to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Roughly what distance did it gone? Tell us as you call.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

Seven days ago, the car was unknown to you. Your own vehicle either does without AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, and so nothing told you the AdBlue inlet sits right next to your diesel. It can happen to anyone, anywhere across Angus.

Meaning? Whatever case above applies here — run or not — plus one extra step. Many rental and fleet contracts require the owner's approval before repairs.

Settling it before we turn up is faster, so phone the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. Stuck near Hillside Village Hall or at Montrose till the firm answers, the car stays turned off throughout.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hillside?

At times the honest answer is "I think so". Too light, that bottle; a trace of ammonia near the filler; no clear memory of which cap. Sound familiar? A rushed top-up by the gates of the local primary school, or a call to a friend in Craigo: both fit.

What it means: a little spilled around your filler does no damage to your motor. Once it's inside the diesel tank, though, it does. You can't tell which by turning the key, and doing so would suck in any AdBlue that is in that tank.

Next: assume it got in, then leave your engine off. Call us and describe what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Hillside AdBlue drain

Whichever situation you are in, this job starts the same way. Anywhere your car is — Black Abbot's car park, a road beside Dun and Hillside Parish Church, a drive, a filling station — our van arrives and asks about the liquid, the amount, and if the engine has turned over. Answers shape the work; the price follows by phone whilst no one has set off yet.

AdBlue crystallises and eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, so it won't wash out on its own; that's why the flush, after the drain, matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol. Last come the filter, cleaned or replaced if necessary; fresh diesel; and a check of your car. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

Firing it up comes at the end. Our test that it runs correctly on new diesel comes before we go. Our engineers do the whole job where the car is, and long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been caught early. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Dig out your insurance while we're en route: misfuelling cover comes built into many policies.
