AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Hinderwell? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble starts once it's pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car stands in Hinderwell. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Hinderwell: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Take the keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it away.
  • Tell us a postcode starting TS13 5, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: the motor remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance up High Street.
  • By the road, do not try draining it on your own.

Get the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Hinderwell, whether it's the Hinderwell Service Station or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the engine emits. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Ellerby overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through once your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. A motor left sitting around Hinderwell with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Hinderwell

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the BP. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be watered down, because it splits again — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Hinderwell or out in Borrowby, does more harm than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside that tank, the simplest section of the whole system to empty, wherever the vehicle has stopped around North Yorkshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hinderwell: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Oakridge Community Primary School the top-up is rushed. Someone tips the container in outside their house, just off Runswick Lane, as the day ends. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside Brown Cow, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're in Hinderwell or the remainder of North Yorkshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hinderwell, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

Maybe returning from Cricket Club Field, or part way across Hinderwell, the motor might go lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or stall. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A1(M), under 50 miles from Hinderwell, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Hinderwell to the car park by Hinderwell Village Hall is one matter; heading for Sunderland, under 50 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been started. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's caught quickly.

Hinderwell: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near Hinderwell Methodist Chapel, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Hinderwell, and the van comes to it. Which fluid went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run: our engineers check before all else, because those decide the job.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed right through because what remains will not flush out unaided. Testing your car follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the filter is cleaned or, where needed, swapped. Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes last. At that point our technicians start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Lealholm or a drive in Hinderwell. Our technicians make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Hinderwell

Since each jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be fair. Three things move the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Hinderwell Cricket Club.

With that in mind, each call from Hinderwell begins with the identical trio — what went in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote. Given those replies, the range shrinks to one fixed number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your insurance while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
