Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hindpool: Why It Occurs

Leave your engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Normally, if the engine has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car is in Hindpool. The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen round Hindpool and North Walney hold another liquid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the error lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Hindpool

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Walney Road, perhaps outside The Owl and the Pussycat on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar cars are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it. Whether it happens in Barrow-in-Furness or the middle of Hindpool, it's the same few seconds.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt around Hindpool or a drive out in Barrow Island. A few seconds, that's all.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
  • On plenty of motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.
  • The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a rental or fleet car — at Barrow-In-Furness's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever around Cumbria, use this routine.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Duke Street.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Don't go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hindpool?

Short order, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Asda, Tesco or any forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle clear when you ask. If you are on your own driveway around Hindpool, leave the car where it stands.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off. On the M6, under 25 miles from Hindpool, that means the next junction. A short hop across Hindpool is a smaller job than a run towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

When our engineers turn up in Hindpool, what occurs?

The van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St. James' Church, or outside Brisbane Park Infant School. The replies determine the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run. During the phone call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly. Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that washes away unaided, no matter how long it sits. Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. Then our technicians start it and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive. Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
