Hirael: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts until your engine pulls it through. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Hirael. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hirael

Do these:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting LL57 1, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone sets the pump running on many diesels. Skip it.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it's wasted.
  • Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short way down Stryd Mason.
  • Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Hirael forecourt you are on, the BP or any other. On the drive, the car remains just where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, which is why a car filled in Upper Bangor last night and not switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as no one turns your key.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. A car left standing in Hirael with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. And there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Hirael

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Asda. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left in that tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. It cannot simply be run through, because it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in West End or the heart of Hirael equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Gwynedd your vehicle has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Hirael?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car. A driver tips the bottle in at home, right off Stryd Robert, as the day ends. Another version: dim light, a pub car park outside Lord Nelson, and someone using that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere in Gwynedd, Hirael included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hirael?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. Via the filter, through the lines, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Bangor Park, say, or part way across Hirael. Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the Moreton Spur, under 50 miles from Hirael, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Hopping across Hirael to the car park by Bangor Swimming Pool is one thing; driving towards Bangor, under a mile away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has stopped. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Hirael: what it takes

A street beside Site of Bangor Castle, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Hirael, we travel to it. The work depends on three answers, and our engineers ask for before all else — what got in, the quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is drained, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue won't flush away unaided. A test of the car comes at the end, after clean diesel is added and your filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where the motor has not run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to bleed your system on clean diesel. At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Bangor (Gwynedd) or a driveway in Hirael. The check before we leave is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

About Hirael and where it is

Hirael is a coastal suburban area in northwest Wales, situated near the city of Bangor and close to the Menai Strait. Hirael is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and relatively low elevation of 11 metres above sea level. Hirael is bordered by nearby places such as Garth and Maesgeirchen, and is part of the larger Bangor urban area.

Hirael and Gwynedd: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the LL postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue jobs in Hirael reach most of Gwynedd as well, Garth, Maesgeirchen and Bangor among them. If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — your drive at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — we drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; that suits Hirael, a residential suburb, well.

Hirael: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job is different, and so no fixed price is honest. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Bangor Quaker Meeting House.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Hirael begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — before a quote. Once those are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
