AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Holland Slack? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm happens till your motor sucks it through. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully cleaned where the car sits around Holland Slack. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Holland Slack

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting PR5 6, or whichever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so call wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift your car: your engine remains off.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Alderwood Road.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Holland Slack forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It does not combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Higher Walton last night and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A car left sitting around Holland Slack with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running past them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell. Mixed through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; running your engine does the harm.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Walton Summit or the middle of Holland Slack.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Lancashire the vehicle sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Holland Slack?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually happens at home, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Mary's and St Benedict's Roman Catholic Primary School the refill is hurried. Close to Pearwood Close, a driver pours a container in on that drive in the evening. Otherwise, in dim light by Beam & Brycg, the car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuel types. Wherever around Lancashire, Holland Slack included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it off.

Holland Slack: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

You may see your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Cockshott Wood or halfway across Holland Slack. Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M61, under a mile from Holland Slack, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

A quick hop across Holland Slack to the car park by St Aidan is one matter; heading for Preston, under 3 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Permanent damage is very rare when it's noticed soon.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Holland Slack: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street beside Top of Orr's Mill Tower, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Holland Slack, and our van comes to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run, because those replies determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when that tank is drained, right there. Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than for petrol. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers arrive, provided your motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on clean diesel. You drive off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Holland Slack or in a space by Bamber Bridge. Before we go, our technicians make sure it is running smoothly with clean diesel in. Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Holland Slack

Every job differs, so not one fixed price would be fair. Three things move the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Valley Church.

That's why each call from Holland Slack starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run. Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
