Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hollin Hall: Why It Happens

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where your car stands in Hollin Hall, is normally all it takes if caught before the engine runs. Here in advance? In that case the rest covers how it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Hollin Hall and Wycoller carry, with diesel feeding the engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what filler it needs. The error lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Hollin Hall

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off White Lee Avenue, or heading home in the car park outside Trawden Arms.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, keeps on. Trawden or the heart of Hollin Hall: it takes the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Laneshaw Bridge or a forecourt around Hollin Hall.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the flap and look for a label — many vehicles show which goes in which inlet right there.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Colne? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Lancashire, use this routine.

  • Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and never in a rush beside Bank Street on the verge.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting your car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Step five stays out.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hollin Hall?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the EG On the Move, ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump. If you are on your own driveway around Hollin Hall, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. On the M65, under 3 miles from Hollin Hall, that means the next exit. Mileage matters — a short hop across Hollin Hall is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Bradford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

Our arrival around Hollin Hall, and what occurs next

Our van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near St Mary the Virgin, or outside Trawden Forest Primary School. The answers decide this work and our price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run. That quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of the system. Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that clears away on its own, however long it sits. The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car. The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run take roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive. Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
