Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Holme: Why It Occurs
Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Holme. Reading in advance? In that case what follows covers how it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor
No single liquid but two: that is how many modern diesels near Holme and Little Horton carry, with diesel feeding the motor. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.
Different tanks, different fillers. Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap it needs. The mistake lives in that gap.
AdBlue in the diesel tank in Holme: how it takes place
Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Queensfield Drive, perhaps outside The Black Bull on the way home that evening.
Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.
A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, carries on. Whether it happens in Little Horton Green or the middle of Holme, it is the same few seconds.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Dirk Hill or a forecourt in Holme.
- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show which belongs in each inlet right there.
- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.
- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Bradford Interchange? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank
Wherever across West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Hutson Street.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
- Shut the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.
Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there. Do not go on to stage five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Holme?
Short order, then. First: your motor remains off. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.
Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the Asda or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Holme.
Already run? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off. On the M606, under a mile from Holme, that means the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Holme.
Holme: what occurs when our engineers arrive
By Newby Primary School, near Kingdom Hall of Jevhovah's Witnesses or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Both the work and our price depend on three replies — what liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask. No one heads out before you have heard the quote over the phone.
Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is drained. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it is running smoothly.
Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house. No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
