AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Holsworthy? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully purged where the car stands in Holsworthy. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Holsworthy: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Take your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting EX22 6, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short way up Victoria Square is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Holsworthy forecourt you are on, the BP included. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. From a separate tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what your motor emits. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Chilsworthy last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once your engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning in Holsworthy leaves things worse. Inside your tank only, time costs nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Holsworthy

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through. Whether your car sits in Burnards Ho or the heart of Holsworthy, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just in your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever the car has stopped around Devon.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Holsworthy

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Holsworthy Church of England Primary School the refill is hurried. Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, just off High Street, as the day ends. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by The Kings Arms.

Hired cars, brand-new motors, company motors, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it most. Anywhere across Devon, Holsworthy as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Holsworthy, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. It's been drawn through your filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Stanhope Park or halfway across Holsworthy. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M5, under 50 miles from Holsworthy, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Holsworthy to park beside Holsworthy Museum and a drive of under 50 miles for Plymouth are such separate jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been started. Permanent damage is very rare when it is caught early.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Holsworthy: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped in Holsworthy — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Holsworthy Memorial Hall — our van comes to the car. The work rests on three replies, which our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is drained, on the spot. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the system on fresh diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, by the nearest station or on a driveway around Holsworthy. The test before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue drains in Holsworthy and across Devon

Whimble, Derriton and Chasty are among the towns near Holsworthy that the same teams serve, together with most of Devon beyond, throughout the EX postcode area. Near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking is better than assuming, and so phone.

Anywhere the car stands — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians drain it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Holsworthy, a riverside town, well.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Holsworthy

Because the jobs vary, a flat price would not be fair. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Holsworthy Parish Church of St. Peter & St. Paul.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Holsworthy opens with the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether it ran — before a figure. Their answers shrink the range right down to a single number.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
