Holt: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. The trouble begins once it's pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully purged where your car stands in Holt. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.
Holt, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once
Things to do:
- So no one can turn your ignition on, take the keys away.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
- Tell us a postcode starting NR25 6, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.
Never do these:
- Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
- Many diesels power their pump the moment the ignition comes on, so leave the vehicle off.
- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's wasted.
- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Market Place.
- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.
On a forecourt around Holt, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the pump. On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a separate tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what the engine lets out. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.
Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Hempstead last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.
From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays inside. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car parked in Holt. Just inside that tank, it stays the same. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of harm.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol
Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left in the tank, it does nothing.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Lower Bodham or the middle of Holt.
As with petrol, there is good news. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across Norfolk your vehicle sits.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Holt: how it ends up there
In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. No one means it; many designs invite it. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.
A few familiar ways account for most cases. The top-up is rushed outside Holt Community Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken in. After work, a container goes in on a drive close to Fish Hill. Or your car is topped up in the car park at Feathers Hotel, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.
Hired vehicles, new vehicles, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Wherever you are around Holt or the rest of Norfolk, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.
Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Holt?
Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.
You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Methodist Memorial Garden or halfway across Holt. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.
On the M11, over 50 miles from Holt, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.
Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That's why crossing Holt to park beside Bakers & Larners of Holt and a drive of under 25 miles for Norwich are very different jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.
We do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. Permanent damage is very rare when it is spotted soon.
Holt: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel
The car remains put, whether that's a street beside Red Dot Gallery, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Holt, and the van comes to it. Three replies decide the work, and so first we ask which fluid got in, roughly the amount, plus if your motor has run.
Next, draining that tank right there removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't clear out by itself. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Last, the system is bled with fresh diesel. After that our engineers start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Sheringham or a driveway in Holt. It's tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our technicians head off. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Holt
There's no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same. What shifts the price is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Holt Town Council.
What was put in, how much, and whether it ran: each Holt enquiry opens by asking exactly those, ahead of a figure, not afterwards. With those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.
The quote is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.
