Hood Manor: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, done just where the car stands in Hood Manor, is normally what it takes if found before the motor runs. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers
Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Hood Manor and Bewsey carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.
Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hood Manor: how it occurs
Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.
Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Grange Farm Close, or on the way home in the car park outside The Rose Inn.
Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Whether it happens in Old Hall or the middle of Hood Manor, it's the same few seconds.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
Be it a Hood Manor forecourt or a driveway over in Bank Quay, take a few seconds on these before anything goes in.
- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show what goes in which inlet right there.
- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Warrington West? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank
The day the light goes on, wherever across Cheshire, use this routine.
- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed by Canons Road at the roadside.
- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.
- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.
- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Never go on to step five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hood Manor?
The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.
The attendants at Texaco, Asda or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear if asked. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Hood Manor.
If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Hood Manor sits under 3 miles from the M62; on it, take the first junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Liverpool, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hood Manor.
When our technicians turn up in Hood Manor, what happens?
Outside Sankey Valley St James Church of England Primary School, near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it. The replies settle the work and the quote, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run. On the call itself, you are told the quote — before anything else.
Then your tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it matters more. A test is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed. After that we start it and make sure it runs properly before we leave.
With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our technicians are there. Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
