Hook Green: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes when your pump begins pulling it. In Hook Green, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Hook Green, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

  • So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DA13 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the motor remains off.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Tradescant Drive.
  • Draining the tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

Get the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the island if you're at a forecourt in Hook Green, whether it is the Esso or elsewhere. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not blend. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A motor filled on a driveway in Meopham Station yesterday evening and not started since is the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though when your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels. A car left sitting in Hook Green with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Hook Green

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Texaco, and this issue is thinned fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Sole Street or the middle of Hook Green.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in Kent your car sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Hook Green?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets hurried outside Meopham Community Academy, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in. Near Dormers Drive, someone pours a container in on that drive after work. One more version: dim light, a pub car park outside George Inn, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical mistake, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you are around Hook Green or the rest of Kent.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hook Green?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and pipework.

Maybe returning from Judson's Recreation Ground, or part way across Hook Green, your engine might go rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. When you safely can, stop then switch everything off — without restarting to test. More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M2, under 5 miles from Hook Green, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why crossing Hook Green to park near St John the Baptist and a drive of under 25 miles for Southend-on-Sea are very different jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

We do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has ended up, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is spotted early.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Hook Green

Wherever it has stopped in Hook Green — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Meopham Leisure Centre — our van travels to your car. Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and whether your engine has run, since those replies settle the work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing the vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if needed, replaced. Not run? Then count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with clean diesel. Whether it is a parking space at Meopham or a driveway in Hook Green, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off. The test before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Hook Green?

Every job differs, so no single price is fair. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Meopham Library.

Which fluid got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Hook Green enquiry opens by asking precisely that, before a quote, never afterwards. Once those are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Check your policy while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
