How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Horseley Heath

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a full flush, done just where your car stands in Horseley Heath, is normally all it needs if caught before the motor runs. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to prevent it for good.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Horseley Heath and Dudley Port run, with diesel for your motor. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Different tanks, different fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel gets filled on each forecourt call-out, again and again. The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Horseley Heath?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Horseley Road before work, or in the car park outside The Horseley Tavern on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started. Great Bridge or the middle of Horseley Heath: it is the same few seconds in both.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Horseley Heath or a drive out in Ocker Hill. A few seconds, that's all.

  • Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark what goes in which filler right there.
  • Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Dudley Port.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is in West Midlands — a routine to use.

  • Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside Arnhem Way on the verge.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
  • The two under a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel filler stays shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Stop once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently through the own spout.
  • Shut the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Never go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Horseley Heath?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins. Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Applegreen or the Asda, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Horseley Heath.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then switch off. The next exit is where to leave when you are on the M5, under 3 miles from Horseley Heath. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Horseley Heath makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Wolverhampton — so say about how far it went.

Horseley Heath: what occurs when we get there

By St Martin's CofE Primary School, near Hebron Gospel Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it. What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the answers decide the work and quote. The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it is left. The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of your car. Then our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once we arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
