AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hough Side? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Being water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when the pump begins drawing it. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Hough Side. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Hough Side: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

  • Pocket your keys, and that stops someone turning the electrics on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a LS28 9 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: your motor stays off.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short distance up Ivy Chase is too far to drive it.
  • Draining that tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

The attendants on duty at any Hough Side forecourt — the Morrisons included — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. On the drive, the car stays just where it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its supply from. A car topped up on a drive in Park Spring overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the motor turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Lines carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle sitting around Hough Side. Just in that tank, it stays the same. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Essar's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the main issue. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the car sits in Troydale or the heart of Hough Side, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in West Yorkshire your vehicle has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Hough Side?

It's not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. It usually happens outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. The top-up is hurried outside Park Spring Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped in. In the evening, a container goes in on a drive near Hough Side Lane. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside The Swinnow.

It happens most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're around Hough Side or the rest of West Yorkshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hough Side?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may show up, perhaps part way across Hough Side or coming back from Hough Top Playing Fields. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M621, under 3 miles from Hough Side, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

A quick hop across Hough Side to the car park by St Marks Methodist Church is one matter; heading towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Hough Side

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a road near Swinnow Community Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Hough Side, and the van comes to it. What went in, roughly how much, plus if your engine has turned over: we check first, since those decide the work.

Then the tank is cleared where your car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Residue from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, if the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Last, the system is bled with new diesel. Whether it is a parking space outside Bramley (West Yorkshire) or a drive around Hough Side, that is where our technicians start it and you head off. The test before our engineers go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Hough Side

There's no honest single price, since the jobs aren't the same. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Christ the Saviour Church.

What got in, how much, and if the engine ran: every Hough Side call begins with precisely that, before any figure, not after. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
