AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Hubberston? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car stands around Hubberston. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Hubberston: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting SA73 3, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way along Silverstream Drive.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

On a forecourt in Hubberston, whether it is the Tesco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. When your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Priory yesterday and never started stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody touches your key.

From there it does two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Hubberston leaves things worse. In your tank only, time costs nothing. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Hubberston

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby. Mixed into your diesel and sitting unused, it is no threat at that stage; using your engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Thornton or the heart of Hubberston alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only in your tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever your vehicle has come to rest around Pembrokeshire.

Hubberston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed. Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off Silverstream, as the day ends. Or a driver new to that flap refills the car in dim light, stopped in the car park by Heart of Oak.

It comes up most in a rental, a new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the spare motor in a home with one of each fuels — the cars people know the least. Leave it off: that is the first step to an identical slip, wherever in Hubberston or the rest of Pembrokeshire you are.

Hubberston: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may show up, maybe part way across Hubberston or coming back from Milford Haven Golf Course. When safe, stop then switch everything off — without turning it on again to test. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M4, under 50 miles from Hubberston, at the next junction and stop safely, not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further into the system. That is why a hop across Hubberston to park near Hubberston Community Centre and a drive of under 15 miles for St Davids are such separate jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Permanent damage is very rare when it is spotted early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Hubberston?

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a road near Milford Haven Library and Information Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Hubberston, and the van travels to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run, because those replies settle this work.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through since residue won't flush away unaided. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, if the motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Hubberston or in a space at Milford Haven. Before we go, our technicians check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

AdBlue drains around Hubberston and across Pembrokeshire

AdBlue jobs in Hubberston go to teams that serve the places around it — Liddeston, Hakin as well as Milford Haven — and most of Pembrokeshire beyond, across SA postcodes. Assuming doesn't help by a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

Wherever your vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians drain it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Hubberston, a residential suburb, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Hubberston?

Not one single price would be honest, because every job differs. What moves the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Pembrokeshire Yacht Club.

That's why every call from Hubberston starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers shrink the range down to a single number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
