Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Humberston

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off and keep your ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts when the pump starts pulling it. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where your car stands around Humberston. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Humberston: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers will see.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DN36 4, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Never:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine remains off.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Midfield Road.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Humberston forecourt you're on, the Tesco or any other. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Holton le Clay overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through if your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle sitting in Humberston. Just in the tank, it stays stable. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of damage.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and the issue is diluted fuel. Mixed through your diesel and left unused, it's harmless for now; using the motor does the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, so watering it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Weelsby or the heart of Humberston equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever around Lincolnshire the car has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to clear.

Humberston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap — can look the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs invite it. A bottle bought when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Humberston Cloverfields Academy the top-up is rushed. A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, right off St Christopher's Road, as the day ends. Else, after dark outside The Countryman, the car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, brand-new motors, fleet motors, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars see it the most. Wherever you are in Humberston or the rest of Lincolnshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Humberston, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Perhaps coming back from Humberston Country Club Golf Course, or midway across Humberston, your motor may run lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash the dash or stall. Once safe, stop and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

Humberston lies under 25 miles from the M180; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Humberston to the car park by St Peter. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it's caught early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Humberston?

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Humberston: a side street close to Burn Fittness Gym, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid got in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, since those decide the work.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue will not flush out unaided. Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of the vehicle. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, your system is primed with new diesel. Then our technicians start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space outside Cleethorpes or a driveway around Humberston. Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel before leaving. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Humberston is a coastal village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Humberston?

There's no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind The Jungle Zoo.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, each call from Humberston opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran. Once they are answered, a range turns into a single firm figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
