Hunmanby: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Usually, if the engine has not turned, it's emptied and fully purged where the car is in Hunmanby. Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it for good.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many current diesels on the roads round Hunmanby and Hunmanby Gap carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler. Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side under one flap. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

Hunmanby: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Church Hill, or heading home in the car park at The Cottage Inn.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started. It's a few seconds, whether out in Muston or right in the heart of Hunmanby.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Filey or a forecourt around Hunmanby.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles mark what belongs in each inlet right there.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is in North Yorkshire — a routine to use.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bridlington Street.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Don't go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hunmanby already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone starts your pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at JET, Gulf or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car clear when you ask. At home in Hunmanby? So the car stays where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. On the Petuaria Way, under 50 miles from Hunmanby, that means the next junction. Mileage counts — a short hop across Hunmanby is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles towards Kingston upon Hull — so tell us roughly how far it went.

Our arrival around Hunmanby, and what occurs next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Hunmanby Primary School, near Hunmanby War Memorial or on your own drive. What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies decide both work and price. Nobody sets off before you have heard our price over the phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol. Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of your car. The engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house. No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
