Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Huyton Park

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off and leave your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it is sucked through your pump — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Huyton Park, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has been run. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Huyton Park

Do:

  • Pull the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting L36 5, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Do not do these:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift your car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short way down Graham's Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

The staff on duty at any Huyton Park filling station — the Asda among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. From a separate reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its fuel from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle topped up in Whitefield Lane End last night and never started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody turns your key.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out. Lines holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked in Huyton Park. Only in your tank, it stays the same. Then there is the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have an issue of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. It cannot simply be run through, because it doesn't burn. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Roby or the middle of Huyton Park.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere around Merseyside your vehicle has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Huyton Park: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. It mostly occurs at home, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets hurried outside Sylvester Primary Academy, because your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped off. Near Saint Mary's Road, a driver tips a bottle in on the drive in the evening. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Queens Arms.

The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company ones, and the other motor in a family with one of each fuel types. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, anywhere in Huyton Park or the rest of Merseyside you happen to be.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Huyton Park?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Through the filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from McGoldrick Park or halfway across Huyton Park. No restarting to check: pull over once safe, then switch everything off. Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M62, under a mile from Huyton Park, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so driving for Liverpool, under 10 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Huyton Park to the car park by St Agnes Roman Catholic Church. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. Lasting damage is very unusual when it's spotted soon.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Huyton Park: what it takes

A street by Huyton United Reformed Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Huyton Park, we travel to it. Three answers decide the work, and so first our technicians ask what was put in, about what quantity, plus if your engine has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through since what remains won't flush out by itself. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Huyton or on a drive around Huyton Park. We make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we go. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

Huyton Park: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each jobs differ, a flat figure wouldn't be fair. What shifts the cost is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Lord Wilson of Rievaulx.

Which fluid went in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Huyton Park enquiry begins with exactly those, ahead of a quote, not after. Those answers shrink the range down to a single number.

The quote is quoted on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
