Then what follows covers why it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — but many modern diesels seen about Hyndburn Bridge and Great Harwood hold another liquid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It's in that gap that the slip happens.

Hyndburn Bridge: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Chatburn Close, or heading home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a strange car.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on. Harwood Bar or the middle of Hyndburn Bridge: it is the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Hyndburn Bridge forecourt or a drive out in Lower Fold, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark what belongs in which filler right there.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Huncoat, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever in Lancashire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Worston Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Both behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side stays closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Finish when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using the own spout.
  • Shut the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Stage five is out.

Hyndburn Bridge: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Ridings Auto Services, the Texaco or anywhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Hyndburn Bridge.

Already started? Pull over when it is safe, then turn off. The next junction means where to leave when you're on the M65, under 3 miles from Hyndburn Bridge. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hyndburn Bridge.

Hyndburn Bridge: what occurs when our engineers get there

Our van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Saint Bartholomews (Old Church), or outside St Hubert's Roman Catholic Primary School, Great Harwood. We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies determine this work and the quote. The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take about half an hour after our engineers are there. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

AdBlue drains in Hyndburn Bridge and across Lancashire

Hyndburn Bridge is a small village, and our teams that cover it also work the places near it, Hindle Fold and Oakenshaw among them, across the BB postcode area. Quickest of all: quote a BB6 7 postcode for the van.

There's no need to shift your car. Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Town_Hall, a lay-by on the way to Duxbury Wood, a driveway. Guessing doesn't help at the back of Towngate Pentecostal, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.
