Hythe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

One fact matters most once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is whether your engine has run afterwards. Out in Dibden Purlieu or here in Hythe, an unstarted motor must remain that way. Leave your motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103; it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Hythe. Already run? Pull over when safe, then turn everything off. It is a bigger job, though step one doesn't change.

Match your case to one of the ones below, wherever in Hampshire you are.

On a Hythe forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Only at this point, bottle yet in hand, you realise that the cap you took off was the wrong one, there at the pump. It might be the Shell, or perhaps the Esso, or a different station in Hythe.

Meaning? Finding out here is as good as it gets. Nothing has pulled it through, so the AdBlue sits only inside the tank.

What to do: don't get back in and crank it to clear the pump. Ask the staff to help you push the car into a parking spot, keep the receipt or the bottle, and ring us from the forecourt. Can't move it by the petrol pump? Our explosion-proof kit keeps a busy forecourt safe, so we can drain the vehicle where it is.

AdBlue in the diesel tank on a Hythe drive?

For days the dashboard had been warning you. Bought a container, tipped it in outside the house, binned the empty — and at that point looked at the cap again, after the fact. Just off The Marsh is no different from any other place.

Meaning? As long as your car has not been driven since, it's close to the forecourt case. On the bottom of that tank is exactly where AdBlue stays, because it won't blend with diesel — and a night passing makes nothing of the difference.

Put your keys in the house tonight — otherwise someone may drive it away first thing — and call us. Our engineers drain it on your drive, whether that is around Hythe or out in Frostlane. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel around Hythe?

A short way after topping up, the engine began misbehaving: rough running, smoke, less power, warnings on your dash. Maybe it was on High Street, perhaps on the way out towards Southampton, under 3 miles away.

Meaning? Your fuel pump has taken the AdBlue in. The injection pump and every injector get it too on a bigger trip, once the fuel filter and pipework have it. Every restart, like each mile, pushes it deeper.

Next: find a safe place, stop, and switch your engine off. Leave at the next junction — not the services further along — if you are on the M27, under 5 miles from Hythe. Don't restart it to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Tell us hear the mileage driven as you call.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

It is a vehicle you have had for a week. Your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, and so no one told you the AdBlue cap was just next to your diesel. Anyone, wherever across Hampshire, might make the same.

In short: an extra step on top of the situations above, and those turn on whether it's run. The owner often needs to sign off the work, under plenty of hire and fleet agreements.

What to do: call the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's quicker settled before our technicians get there than after. Stuck by Hythe Library or at Southampton Town Quay till the firm replies, the car stays turned off the whole time.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Hythe?

At times, "I think so" is all anyone can honestly say. Which cap was taken off, you can't say; meanwhile the bottle weighs less than it ought to, and ammonia lingers by your filler. Maybe on a friend's drive in Applemore, or in a rush outside Hythe Primary School at the school run.

What it means: a little spilled round your filler does no harm to the motor. Inside your diesel tank, however, AdBlue harms it. If there is AdBlue in the tank, firing up your car will suck it in, and it would not tell you which either.

Your move: behave as though it got in, and never start the motor. Ring us and explain what you saw; we would rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in every Hythe AdBlue drain

Each situation has the same opening to the work. Filling station, driveway, The Lord Nelson's car park or a street beside St Johns Hythe — the van comes to your car, and three questions come next: which liquid, which quantity, and if it ran. The price is given on the call, before a van leaves, and the answers shape the work.

Then that tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after your filter has been flushed or replaced, and your car is finally tested. Where the motor hasn't been started, expect about half an hour once we arrive, in most cases.

The last step is firing it up. Our engineers check it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. If it is noticed soon, the car very seldom has long-term damage, and the entire job takes place where it is. Paying comes on the day, never upfront. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer. Plenty of policies include misfuelling, and so check yours while the van travels.
