Idle: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

Everything turns on a single detail: whether your engine has started after the AdBlue went in — more than anything else. Over in Springfield or right in Idle, an unrun motor should remain unrun. Usually this is draining and properly cleaning it right there in Idle — and so keep the ignition and engine off and call 0333 366 0103. Already run? Stop once safe, then switch it off. Step one stays unchanged, even though the work grows.

Below: the cases we meet, anywhere around West Yorkshire. Choose yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Idle forecourt

Imagine it: stood by the petrol pump, gripping the bottle, you realise the cap you opened was not the correct one. Somewhere around Idle, then — Morrisons, Sainsbury's, or anywhere else close by.

What it means: this is the best location to find out. No pump has drawn it in, and so the AdBlue sits only in that tank.

What to do: don't get back in and fire it up to clear the pump. Three things: a push into a bay with the staff helping, the bottle kept, and a ring to us from where you stand. Can't move the car by the petrol pump? Our explosion-proof equipment keeps a live forecourt safe, and so we can drain the vehicle where it is.

Idle, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dashboard had been nagging you. A bottle from the shop, tipped in on the drive — and it was just at the bin that the cap got a second look. Driveways near The Green see it as much as any other street.

Meaning? As long as the car hasn't moved since, it's second to the pump case. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

Your move: the keys in the house, so nobody takes the vehicle anywhere first thing. Then, phone. Thorpe or Idle: whichever your driveway is, that is where it gets emptied. Late-night drains outside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.

Idle: set off with AdBlue in a diesel?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Maybe heading to Bradford, under 5 miles away, or simply along Stanley Street.

What it means: your fuel system has sucked the AdBlue in. The injection pump and every injector see it as well on a bigger trip, once the fuel filter and lines have had it. Every restart, like every mile, pushes it deeper.

Pull in safely — that is the next job — then switch everything off. On the M606, under 5 miles from Idle, that means the next exit, not the services further on. No trial restarts: clearing itself isn't something AdBlue will do. About what distance did it go? Tell us when you phone.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company vehicles

You have had this vehicle hardly a week. On your own vehicle, AdBlue is absent or elsewhere. On this one, the cap is right next to the diesel cap — news to you. Any driver, wherever across West Yorkshire, might make the same.

What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. Many hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on your car.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before our technicians arrive than after. Keep the vehicle switched off while the answer arrives, even if you are parked outside Apperley Bridge or close to Idle Library & Information Centre.

Idle: unsure if it was AdBlue in the diesel tank?

At times, "I think so" is the most anyone can honestly say. Lighter, the bottle; a hint of ammonia near the filler; a hazy memory of which cap. Look familiar? The gates of Thorpe Primary in a rush, perhaps, or a friend's driveway over in Thackley.

Meaning? Drips around the filler never reach the motor at all. Inside the diesel tank, however, AdBlue damages it. You cannot tell which by turning the key, and doing so will draw in any AdBlue that is in the tank.

What to do: treat it as if it was put in. Do not fire it up. Inspecting a tank that turns out clean beats draining one once it has been run — so ring and tell us what you saw.

Every AdBlue drain around Idle shares these steps

Whichever scenario you are in, the job starts the same way. Filling station, drive, The Idle Draper's car park or a road by Thorpe Methodist Church — the van reaches your vehicle, and three answers come next: which liquid, which quantity, and if it ran. On the phone, ahead of dispatch, you are told the quote, and those answers shape the job too.

A thorough flush follows the drain. With petrol it's standard; with AdBlue it is crucial, since deposits form and some metals corrode, and none of that rinses out unaided. Clean diesel goes in after the filter has been flushed or changed, and your car is then tested. The majority of unrun vehicles are a half-hour job after the moment our technicians turn up.

The final step is firing it up. With fresh diesel in, it runs while our engineers confirm it is running smoothly, and then we head off. The whole job is done where your car is, and when it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare. For your insurer: an engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, no money upfront. Worth knowing: many insurers include misfuelling cover, so a quick look at your documents as you wait is worthwhile.

Over BD postcodes, the vans serving Idle — a residential suburb — work nearby places as well, Fourlands and Simpson Green among them. Quickest of all: a BD10 9 postcode for where you stand.

Whether the vehicle is on a lay-by on the way to Idle Recreation Ground or in a car park in the middle of Idle, it does not need to shift. Draining happens on the spot. Ring and ask rather than guess when you are by Holy Trinity, near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain.
