Ilford: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till your engine sucks it round. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully flushed where the car stands around Ilford. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ilford: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will know.
  • Give us a postcode starting IG1 1, or whatever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

  • Moving the vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way down Handforth Road.
  • Draining your tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Ilford filling station — the Shell included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

It does not combine. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its supply from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Little Ilford last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it's removed from the system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning in Ilford makes it worse. In that tank only, time costs nothing. And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Ilford

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Esso, and this issue is diluted fuel. No damage is done as long as it stays put, blended into your diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It does not burn, so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next fill will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Ilford or out in Gants Hill, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere around Greater London the car has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Ilford

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — may look the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts allow it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Cleveland Road Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Chadwick Road. Else, after dark by O'Neill's Ilford, the car is refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuels. Leave it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere around Ilford or the remainder of Greater London you happen to be.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ilford, and the motor started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and pipework.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Uphall Recreation Ground, say, or midway across Ilford. Once you safely can, pull over and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M11, under 3 miles from Ilford, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Ilford to the car park by Cineworld is a very different job from a run towards London, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Permanent damage is very rare if it's spotted early.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Ilford

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near City Gates Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Ilford, and our van comes to it. Which fluid got in, about how much, plus whether your engine has turned over: we check first, because those decide the work.

Then the tank is cleared where the car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't clear away on its own. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, provided the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Priming the system with new diesel comes last. You head off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Ilford or in a space by the nearest station. Our engineers check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving. Because the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

AdBlue drains around Ilford and across Greater London

Our vans that answer AdBlue call-outs in Ilford also cover the places round it, Manor Park, Loxford and Cranbrook among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the IG postcode area. Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.

Anywhere the car sits — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our engineers drain it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Ilford, a small village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Ilford?

Every job differs, and so no single price would be honest. Three things change the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Mercato Metropolitano Ilford.

Before any quote, not after, every call from Ilford begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus whether it ran. Their answers narrow the range down to a single number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
