AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ingrow: How It Happens and How to Prevent It
Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Usually, if the motor has not turned, it is emptied and fully cleaned where your car sits around Ingrow. Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank
Many current diesels on the roads about Ingrow and Bracken Bank carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.
There's a filler on each tank. Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side under one flap. Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler it needs. Mistakes happen in the gap between them.
AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ingrow: how it occurs
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Corn Street, or on the way home in the car park at The Great Northern.
Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.
A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on. Spring Bank or the heart of Ingrow: it is the same few seconds in both.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Check these first, on a forecourt in Ingrow or a drive over in Woodhouse. Seconds, no more.
- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.
- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says which it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Keighley? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.
- Not in a rush on the side of Rye Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.
- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.
Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop. Leave out stage five altogether.
AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Ingrow?
Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.
If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Ingrow.
If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Come off the M606 — under 10 miles out of Ingrow — at the first exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Ingrow.
What happens when we arrive around Ingrow
Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside Ingrow Primary School, beside St John's or on your own drive, the van travels to it. We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the answers settle the work and the quote. You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.
Your system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is cleared. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.
Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
