Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Inkerman

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm begins once it is sucked through your lines — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel. In Inkerman, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, Inkerman: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians can see.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NG16 6, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Never:

  • Shifting the vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the motor.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, and so keep it off.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance along Inkerman Road.
  • Draining the tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Inkerman forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included. If you're on your own drive, leave it exactly where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. No part inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and none of it was intended to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its fuel from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in Woodnook yesterday and never started stays the simple one, as long as nobody touches the key.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it is removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages. A motor left sitting around Inkerman with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Inkerman

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Gulf's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the whole issue. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether the car sits in Selston Common or the heart of Inkerman, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Anywhere around Nottinghamshire the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

Inkerman: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone buys a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Selston Church of England Infant and Nursery School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the car. Close to Alma Road, someone tips a bottle in on that drive after work. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park by White Lion, and someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the other car of a home with both fuel types — the cars drivers know the least. Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere around Inkerman or the remainder of Nottinghamshire you are.

Inkerman: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Maybe coming back from Selston Town Football Club & Selston Town Cricket Club, or part way across Inkerman, your engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or stall. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Leave it off rather than restarting it to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M1, under a mile from Inkerman, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards Nottingham, under 10 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Inkerman to the car park by Selston Leisure Centre. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the car has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. Long-term damage is very unusual when it is spotted early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Inkerman?

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road beside Selston Community Partnership Library, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Inkerman, and our van comes to it. The job depends on three replies, which our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than with petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step. Whether it is a parking bay at Kirkby in Ashfield or a driveway around Inkerman, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off. Before we leave, we check it is running correctly with clean diesel in. We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Inkerman and Nottinghamshire

AdBlue call-outs around Inkerman are passed to teams that cover the towns around it — Alma, Hanstubbin plus Allens Green — and much of Nottinghamshire further out, across NG postcodes. If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No towing is needed. In Inkerman, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: the car is drained on the spot, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

Inkerman: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure would be fair, since each job differs. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Tin Hat Centre.

With that reason, each call from Inkerman begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of any figure. Once those are answered, a range turns into a single firm figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
