Irchester: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Irchester. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Irchester: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting NN29 7, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Never do these:

  • Do not start your engine, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Switching your key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't thin it.
  • Even a short stretch along School Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying that tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your car away from the island if you're on a forecourt around Irchester, whether it is the BP or elsewhere. Parked on your own drive? Then it stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits. Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. A motor filled on a drive in Little Wymington yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but once the motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. A motor left standing in Irchester with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running past them, so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Irchester

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole issue. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Whether the vehicle sits in Wymington or the centre of Irchester, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere across Northamptonshire the car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

Irchester: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A container picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The refill gets hurried outside Irchester Community Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken off. A driver pours the container in at home, right off Farndish Road, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park at Irchester Working Mens Club, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, new motors, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar vehicles see it most. Wherever across Northamptonshire, Irchester included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

Irchester: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Barringers Court or halfway across Irchester. When you safely can, pull over and turn it off — without restarting to test. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M1, under 15 miles from Irchester, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Irchester to the car park by Reachout Community Church Irchester is one matter; driving for Milton Keynes, under 25 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. If it is caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Irchester

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Irchester: a side street near Irchester Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over: we ask before all else, because those decide the work.

Then your tank is cleared where your car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol. Next, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of the vehicle. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed your system on clean diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Irchester or in a bay at Wellingborough. It's tested on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians go. We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue drains across Irchester and Northamptonshire

AdBlue jobs in Irchester are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — Knuston, Farndish as well as Little Irchester — and much of Northamptonshire beyond, throughout NN postcodes. Guessing doesn't help by a border or anywhere tricky to pin down; phone and check.

Irchester is a rural village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Irchester?

Since each callouts vary, a single figure would not be honest. Three things change the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Irchester Village Hall.

Before any quote, not after, each call from Irchester begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if the engine ran. Given them, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
