AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ixworth? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The harm begins once it's pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Ixworth. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ixworth: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting IP31 2, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down High Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Ixworth, whether it is the Shell or somewhere else. On your own drive, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — quite unlike fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Pakenham last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car parked in Ixworth. Only inside your tank, it stays the same. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main problem. Blended into your diesel and left still, it is no threat for now; using the motor is the harm.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Whether the car is in Upper Town or the heart of Ixworth, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across Suffolk your vehicle has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Ixworth?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — can look the same. No one means it; many layouts allow it. A bottle picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Ixworth Church of England Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Thetford Road. Otherwise, after dark by The Greyhound, the vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the other car of a home with both fuels — the cars people use the least. Anywhere around Suffolk, Ixworth as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

Ixworth: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Rabbit Plantation, say, or part way across Ixworth. Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no turning it on again to test. Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M11, under 50 miles from Ixworth, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Ixworth to the car park by Ixworth Village Hall & Library is one matter; driving for Ely, under 50 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. Noticed early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Ixworth

A road beside Ixworth Library, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest around Ixworth, we come to it. Three answers decide the work, so first we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine has run.

Next, draining your tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because residue won't flush away by itself. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to bleed the system on fresh diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, at Thurston or on a driveway in Ixworth. The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Ixworth: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a flat price would not be honest. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Mary.

Before any quote, never after, each call from Ixworth begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if the engine ran. Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Our quote is given during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. While our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.
