Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Jennyfield

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the car stands in Jennyfield, is usually all it needs if found before your engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Low Harrogate, as well as Jennyfield, carry on two liquids; your engine gets only the diesel. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for every tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly. Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Jennyfield?

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Harewood Road before work, or in the car park outside Claro Beagle on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it. Whether it occurs in New Park or the middle of Jennyfield, it's the same few seconds.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Harrogate or a forecourt around Jennyfield, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Harrogate's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere around North Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Grantley Drive, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.
  • Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've found your filler and read the cap.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel filler remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop. Stage five is out.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Jennyfield already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on. Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Esso or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Jennyfield.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off. Come off the A1(M) — under 10 miles out of Jennyfield — at the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Jennyfield is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards Ripon, so tell us.

When our technicians arrive around Jennyfield, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Saltergate Junior School, near Jennyfield Styan Community Centre or on your own driveway. Those replies decide the work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run. No one sets off until you've heard our quote by phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system. More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears out unaided, however long it is left. Filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of the car. The motor is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house. Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. While we travel, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

AdBlue drains across North Yorkshire, Jennyfield included

Your car doesn't need to move. The drain takes place right there, whether a driveway, a road near Hydro, or a lay-by towards Grange Quarry Wood. Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Wilfrid's Church.
