Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Jubilee: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out just where the vehicle stands around Jubilee, is normally all it needs when found before the motor runs. Reading in advance? Then what follows covers how it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — yet many modern diesels seen about Jubilee and Small Brook carry another liquid as well. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, again and again. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It is in the gap that the slip happens.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Jubilee: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Milnrow Road, or at Bird in the Hand on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Jubilee or out in Crompton Fold.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Shore Edge or a forecourt in Jubilee.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook says where it is when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Rochdale.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever around Greater Manchester, use this routine.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Dunwood Park Courts.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Skip step five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Jubilee?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the Esso or anywhere else. At home in Jubilee? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run. Come off the M62 — under 3 miles out of Jubilee — at the next junction. About how far did it go? Hopping across Jubilee is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles towards Manchester, and so say.

What occurs when our engineers turn up in Jubilee

The van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Saviour's Mission Church, or outside Buckstones Primary School. Both the work and the price rest on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask. Nobody heads out before you've heard our price by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is emptied. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it matters more. Filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car. Next we start it and check it runs properly before we leave.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
