AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Keith? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Being water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes when the pump starts drawing it. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Keith. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Keith

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so do not bin it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting AB55 5, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Even a short way down Police Lane is too far to drive the car.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

The staff on duty at any Keith filling station — the the nearest petrol station among them — will usually help rolling it aside if you ask. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what your motor emits. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the same place the intake sucks from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Denhead overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it's removed from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages. A motor left standing around Keith with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the another forecourt nearby, and the problem is diluted fuel. Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; running your motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Keith or out in Newmill, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only in that tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever the car has come to rest in Moray.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Keith?

Many cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody means it. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were dropped in. Someone pours the container in at home, just off Union Street, as the day ends. One more version: dim light, the car park by the pub in the village, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet car, or the spare motor in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people know least. Wherever in Moray, Keith included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Keith?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from War Memorial Garden, or midway across Keith, your engine might run rough, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or cut out. No starting it again to test: stop once safe, then turn everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M90, over 50 miles from Keith, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, so heading for Aberdeen, under 50 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Keith to the car park by Keith library. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been run. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it's caught soon.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Keith: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped in Keith — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside 6th Batalion Gordon Highlanders Memorial — the van comes to the car. The job depends on three answers, and we ask for before all else — which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether the motor has run.

Then that tank is drained where the car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Last, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at the nearest station or on a driveway in Keith. It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians leave. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

Keith is a riverside town, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Keith

Not one flat figure could be honest, since each job is different. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind James Taylor Memorial Fountain.

Before any quote, not afterwards, every call from Keith opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether the engine ran. Those answers narrow a range right down to one figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
