AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kempshott? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump starts drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Kempshott, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Kempshott: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it out.
  • Tell us a postcode starting RG22 5, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way down Heron Way.
  • Beside the road, do not try draining it yourself.

On a forecourt in Kempshott, whether it's the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. No part inside an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Worting last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there. It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it touches till it is cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. By daybreak, a vehicle parked in Kempshott with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the main problem. No harm comes as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether your vehicle is in South Ham or the centre of Kempshott, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't stay blended, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Anywhere across Hampshire your car has stopped, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Kempshott?

It's not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. It mostly occurs at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them. The top-up gets hurried outside Kempshott Infant School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped in. After work, a container goes in on a drive close to Buckingham Court. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Kestrel, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare motor in a family with both fuels — the vehicles people know least. Keep it switched off: that's the first response to the same mistake, anywhere in Kempshott or the remainder of Hampshire you happen to be.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Kempshott?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from The Orchard or halfway across Kempshott. When you safely can, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to see. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M3, under 3 miles from Kempshott, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Kempshott to the car park by Buckingham Parade is one thing; driving towards Winchester, under 15 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is caught soon.

Kempshott: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road by Saint Mark's Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the car has stopped in Kempshott, our engineers come to it. The work rests on three replies, which our engineers get before all else — what went in, the amount, and if your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is emptied, on the spot. Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last. You set off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Kempshott or in a bay outside Basingstoke. Before we go, our engineers confirm it is running properly with new diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Kempshott: the cost of fixing it

There is no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same. What changes the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Kempshott Village Hall.

That's why each call from Kempshott starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run. Those replies narrow a range right down to one number.

Our price is quoted on the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
