AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Kendray? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens until the motor pulls it through. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully flushed where the vehicle sits around Kendray. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Kendray: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it out.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a S70 3 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: the engine remains off.
  • Switching the key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along Birk Avenue.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

The staff working at any Kendray forecourt — the TotalEnergies included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave it exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very place the pickup sucks from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Worsbrough Dale last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it's removed from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle sitting around Kendray. Just in that tank, it stays stable. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Tesco, and this issue is diluted fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Kendray or out in Cundy Cross, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere around South Yorkshire the vehicle has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Kendray

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A container picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside The Forest Academy. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Redhill Avenue. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Swaithe Main WMC, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same mistake, same first step — leave it off — wherever you are around Kendray or the remainder of South Yorkshire.

Kendray: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. With any running, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Birk Avenue Park, perhaps, or midway across Kendray. Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M1, under 3 miles from Kendray, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Kendray to the car park by St Andrew is a very different job from a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has ended up. Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Kendray: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car remains put, whether that's a road beside Oaks Colliery Disaster Memorial, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Kendray, and our van travels to it. What went in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is emptied, right there. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The final step is to prime the system on fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking space at Barnsley or a driveway in Kendray, that is where we start the engine and you set off. It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. At the end, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Kendray and South Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Measborough Dike, Hoyle Mill and Stairfoot are among the towns around Kendray that the same teams reach, along with much of South Yorkshire further out, throughout the S postcode area. Near a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

No towing is needed. In Kendray, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is drained where it stands, whether in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Kendray?

Every job differs, and so not one fixed price is honest. Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Farm Road Community Centre.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Kendray begins with the identical trio — what was put in, what quantity, whether it ran — ahead of any quote. When those are known, a range becomes one firm number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
