Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Keppels Column: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103. Normally, when the motor hasn't run, it's drained and fully flushed where the vehicle sits in Keppels Column. Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels around Grange Lane, as well as Keppels Column, carry on two fluids; your motor gets only your diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Every tank has one filler of its own. Many of cars share a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the error lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Keppels Column?

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Upper Wortley Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Bay Horse.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, no part stops it. Whether it occurs in Scholes or the middle of Keppels Column, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Keppels Column

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Keppels Column forecourt or a drive over in Kimberworth Park, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

  • Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Meadowhall's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across South Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Keppel Drive.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • Both behind a single flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel filler stays shut before raising the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting your car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Step five stays out.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Keppels Column?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts. The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so keep it off. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Texaco, the Morrisons or anywhere else. Your own driveway around Keppels Column is the place it stays.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then switch off. On the M1, under a mile from Keppels Column, that means the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Keppels Column is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Sheffield, and so say.

When our technicians arrive around Keppels Column, what happens?

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Caesar's Camp, or outside Redscope Primary School. Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask. On the phone call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. That is why it counts more. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before we go, our engineers start the car and check that it's running properly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need about half an hour after our engineers are there. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
