Kingsmead: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. The trouble starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully purged where your car sits around Kingsmead. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Kingsmead

Do these:

  • Remove your keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting CW9 8, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch up Kingsmead.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

At a forecourt in Kingsmead, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car clear of the pump. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car filled in Hartford last night and not switched on remains the simple one, as long as no one turns the key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. Lines holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Kingsmead. Just inside that tank, it stays stable. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and the problem is thinned fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in the tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Deposits and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Mere Heath or the centre of Kingsmead equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in Cheshire your car has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Kingsmead

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Kingsmead Primary School. Near Regency Way, a driver pours a bottle in on that drive after work. Else, after dark by The Kingfisher, your vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the spare car in a family with one of each fuel types. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Kingsmead or the remainder of Cheshire you are.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Kingsmead?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Toddlers Playground or halfway across Kingsmead. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M6, under 5 miles from Kingsmead, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Kingsmead to the car park by War Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Chester, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it is spotted early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Kingsmead?

Anywhere it has come to rest in Kingsmead — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Davenham Methodist Church — our van comes to the vehicle. The work depends on three replies, and our engineers ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through because residue won't wash away unaided. Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your car is tested. If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes at the end. Then our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space at Greenbank or a driveway in Kingsmead. The check before we head off is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel. As the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Kingsmead and Cheshire

Anywhere your car sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Kingsmead, a village, well.

Kingsmead: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Players Theatre.

What got in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: each Kingsmead enquiry opens with exactly those, before a quote, never afterwards. When those are known, a range turns into a single fixed figure.

Our price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
