AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kintore? Don't Start It
With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only comes when your pump starts drawing it. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Kintore. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.
AdBlue in the diesel tank in Kintore: the first few minutes
To do:
- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
- Tell us a postcode starting AB51 0, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.
Things not to do:
- Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: the motor stays off.
- Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, so leave the vehicle off.
- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Forest Road.
- Draining the tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.
On a forecourt around Kintore, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the pump. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it stands.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.
Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Port Elphinstone yesterday and not switched on remains the simple case, provided no one turns your key.
Two kinds of damage come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside. A vehicle left sitting around Kintore with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a separate form of damage.
Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol
Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Tesco, and this issue is diluted fuel. Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes nothing.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Kinellar or the middle of Kintore.
As with petrol, there's good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Aberdeenshire the car is standing.
Kintore: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank
Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually happens at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.
Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off The Square. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Square Bar & Lounge, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.
Hired cars, new vehicles, company cars, or the spare car in a family with one of each: the least known cars see it most. Anywhere around Aberdeenshire, Kintore as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.
Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Kintore?
Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.
Maybe coming back from Kintore Play Park, or midway across Kintore, your engine may run rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. Once you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — without turning it on again to see. Every start pulls more of it through.
On the M90, over 50 miles from Kintore, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.
How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Kintore to the car park by Kintore War Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Aberdeen, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.
There is more to rinse out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's spotted soon.
Kintore: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel
Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Kintore: a side street near Town House, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has turned over: our engineers check before all else, since those shape the work.
Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through because residue will not flush away by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.
New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at the nearest station or on a drive in Kintore. The test before our engineers leave is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

Kintore: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix
No single figure could be fair, since every job is different. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Bennachie Parish Church.
That's why each call from Kintore starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run. The answers turn a range into a straight price.
You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
