Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kitlye

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's sucked through the lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits around Kitlye. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Kitlye, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Which fluid, and about what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians can see.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a GL6 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: your motor remains off.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.
  • Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Farleys Close.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

On a forecourt in Kitlye, whether it is the Murco or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the pump. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Bussage yesterday and not switched on stays the simple one, as long as nobody touches your key.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. A motor left standing around Kitlye with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Kitlye

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Holbrook Garage and you have a problem of thin fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn. Whether the vehicle is in Chalford or the heart of Kitlye, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever in Gloucestershire the car sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Kitlye

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. The top-up gets rushed outside Eastcombe Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped off. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Woodlands Close. Otherwise, in dim light by Lamb Inn, your car gets refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Kitlye or the remainder of Gloucestershire you are.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Kitlye, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. It's been sucked through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Eastcombe Allotments, perhaps, or midway across Kitlye. No restarting to check: stop when safe, then switch it off. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M5, under 10 miles from Kitlye, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Kitlye to the car park by Eastcombe Baptist Church is one thing; driving towards Gloucester, under 10 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught soon.

Kitlye: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a street beside Eastcombe Village Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Kitlye, and our van travels to it. The work depends on three answers, and we ask for first — which fluid got in, the amount, and if your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one when the tank is emptied, right there. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through since what remains won't flush away unaided. Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Kitlye or in a bay outside Stroud. Our engineers confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Kitlye: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, and so not one fixed quote is honest. The price moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind St Augustine of Canterbury.

Before any quote, never after, every enquiry from Kitlye opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran. Their answers narrow the range right down to a single figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
