Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Knighton

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble begins once it is sucked through your lines — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. In Knighton, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Knighton, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Which product, and about how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BH21 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the engine remains off.
  • Turning your key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.
  • Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance along Knighton Lane.
  • Emptying the tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The staff working at any Knighton filling station — the Texaco included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. On the drive, the vehicle remains just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to travel through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel. It sinks, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from. A motor topped up on a driveway in Canford Magna yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out. A car left standing in Knighton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and this issue is thinned fuel. Mixed into the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat at that stage; running your engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Longham or the middle of Knighton.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Dorset your car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Knighton

It's not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Mostly it is not the filling station: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Bearwood Primary and Nursery School the refill is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Brittany Close. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your car after dark, stopped in the car park by The Bear Cross.

Rented vehicles, new motors, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Keep it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever in Knighton or the rest of Dorset you are.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Knighton, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might appear, maybe part way across Knighton or coming back from Canford Park Link. When you safely can, pull over then turn it off — without restarting to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Knighton sits under 25 miles from the M27; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

Hopping across Knighton to the car park by St. Barnabas Church is one thing; driving for Salisbury, under 25 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. When it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Knighton?

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street beside Saint Mary the Virgin, Hampreston, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Knighton, and the van comes to it. The work rests on three replies, and our engineers ask for before all else — what was put in, the quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't clear out by itself. After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your car. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if the engine hasn't run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. At that point our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Branksome or a drive in Knighton. Our technicians check it runs properly on new diesel before leaving. No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Knighton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Three things shift the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Chapel.

Before any figure, not after, every enquiry from Knighton opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran. Those replies narrow the range down to one figure.

The price is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
