AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Knighton? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes when your pump begins pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Knighton, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has run. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Knighton: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Which product, and about what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will see.
  • Give us a postcode starting LD7 1, or whichever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Do not do these:

  • Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch along High Street.
  • Emptying your tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

On a forecourt around Knighton, whether it's the Texaco or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the pump. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor lets out. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was meant to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Stowe last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it is removed from your system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. By daybreak, a car sitting around Knighton with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is only in the tank, nothing changes. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Knighton

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Oil4Wales's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole issue. No damage is done as long as it sits put, blended into the diesel — only once your engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Skyborry Green or the centre of Knighton equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever in Powys your car has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Knighton?

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. Nobody intends it. Mostly it's never the forecourt: someone buys a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Hurrying, outside St Mary's CofE Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Russell Street. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Watson's Ale House.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuels. Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in Knighton or the rest of Powys.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Knighton?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may appear, maybe part way across Knighton or returning from Great Frydd Wood. Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M54, under 50 miles from Knighton, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why a hop across Knighton to park beside Knighton Baptist Church and a drive of under 25 miles towards Hereford are such separate jobs. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's spotted early.

Knighton: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in Knighton — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Knighton Methodist Church — our van comes to the car. Three replies shape the job, so first we ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and if the engine has run.

Then your tank is drained where the vehicle waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because residue will not wash away unaided. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at the nearest station or on a drive around Knighton. We check it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. At the end, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

No towing is needed. In Knighton, a riverside town, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is drained where it stands, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Knighton: the cost of fixing it

No single price would be honest, because each job is different. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind King Edward's Church.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, every call from Knighton opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus if the engine ran. Their answers narrow the range down to one number.

The quote is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
