AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Knowefield: What Now?

Everything turns on a single detail: whether your engine has been run after the AdBlue went in — far more than anything else. Out in Whiteclosegate or right around Knowefield, an unstarted engine should remain unrun. Ring 0333 366 0103 with your ignition and engine both off. Across Knowefield, such a case is generally emptied and cleaned where it stands. When your engine has run, stop safely first, then turn the car off. It is a bigger job, though stage one does not change.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Knowefield forecourt

Just at this point, bottle still in hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, there at the pump. It might be the Morrisons, or the BP, or another station in Knowefield.

In short: no better place exists to discover it. The AdBlue is in your tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.

Next: avoid the temptation to start it just to move away from the petrol pump. Phone us from the forecourt after your vehicle is in a bay — the attendants will lend a hand to push it — and keep the receipt. Stuck beside the petrol pump? Our explosion-proof equipment makes a busy forecourt safe, and so it can be drained where it is.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Knowefield

On the dash, a warning had been lit for days. Bought a container, poured it in outside the house, recycled the empty — and at that point looked at the cap a second time, too late. Drives near Knowefield Avenue see it as much as any other street.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so nobody moves the car in the morning. Then call. Your drive is where it is drained, be it around Knowefield or Stanwix. The pumping kit runs quiet enough that it won't wake the street at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Knowefield

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving around Knowefield?

A short way beyond filling up, your engine started playing up: rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash. Beech Grove, perhaps, or the way to Carlisle — a trip of under 3 miles.

Meaning? Your fuel pump has sucked the AdBlue in. Past the filter, through the lines, and — the more the mileage — deeper into the injection pump and each injector. It goes deeper with every extra mile driven and every restart.

Next: pick a safe spot, stop, then switch your engine off. Leave at the next junction — not the services further along — if you're on the M6, under 3 miles from Knowefield. Restarting it to check achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears on its own. Call us and say how far you drove.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

You've had the vehicle hardly a week. The AdBlue filler sits right beside the diesel filler, which you did not know, since your own vehicle either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Wherever you happen to be across Cumbria, any driver could slip up.

Meaning? Whatever case above counts here — run or not — plus one extra step. Many hire and company agreements require the owner's sign-off before work.

What to do: call the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before our technicians arrive than after. Stuck by St Michaels Church or outside Carlisle until someone replies, your car remains switched off the whole time.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank around Knowefield?

Now and then, "I think so" is the most you can truthfully say. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia around your filler, and you cannot remember which cap you took off. The gates of Stanwix School in a hurry, say, or a friend's driveway over in Belah.

In short: a spill round your filler does the motor no harm. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. Any AdBlue in your tank will be drawn in by turning on your car, and the start wouldn't settle which it is in any case.

Next: act as though it went in, then leave your motor off. Tell us what you saw on the phone. A clear tank checked counts as a better outcome than a run one drained.

Knowefield: what each AdBlue drain has in common

Each situation has the same start to the job. We come to the vehicle, whether it is on a forecourt, a driveway, the car park at Crown & Thistle or a side street close to 1940S Horse Jump, and ask three things: what was put in, about how much, and whether your motor has been run. Replies set the work; the price follows by phone whilst nobody has left yet.

Then your tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed or replaced, and your car is then checked. If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

The final step is starting it. Before our engineers leave, it is checked to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel. Long-term damage is very unusual when it's spotted soon, and the entire job is done where the car is. Nothing is taken upfront, payment is made on the day, and you get what your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of policies cover misfuelling, so check yours while the van travels.
