AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Knowl, and What to Do Next
One fact matters most when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if the engine has been started afterwards. Over in Littlemoor or right around Knowl, an unrun motor must stay that way. Phone 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and engine still off. Across Knowl, that is typically emptied and flushed where it stands. Already started? Pull over when safe, then switch everything off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.
Match your case to one of the ones below, wherever around West Yorkshire you are.
At the pump around Knowl: AdBlue in a diesel
Only at this point, nozzle yet in hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, right at the pump. Somewhere in Knowl, then — Shell, Esso, or somewhere else nearby.
Put simply: there is no better place exists to spot it. Only that tank has AdBlue; no part beyond it has taken it in.
What to do: don't get back in and fire it up to clear the petrol pump. Ask the staff to help you push the vehicle into a parking space, keep the till receipt or the bottle, then call us from the forecourt. If it can't be shifted, it can be drained at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a working forecourt.
At home in Knowl with AdBlue in the diesel tank
For days the dash had been warning you. Bought a container, poured it in at home, binned the empty — and only then checked the cap a second time, after the fact. Just off The Knowl is not different from any other place.
Meaning? Provided your car hasn't been driven since, it is close to the pump case. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of that tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.
Keep your keys indoors tonight — or a person might drive it away at breakfast — and call us. Out in Snake Hill or right here in Knowl, the draining happens at your drive. Night-time clears beside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.
Set off with AdBlue in a diesel around Knowl?
Rough running, smoke, lost power or a lit dashboard started a mile or two after the top-up. Anywhere on York Grove or else on the road to Bradford — under 10 miles away.
The point: the system has pulled AdBlue through by now. It has been through the fuel filter and the fuel lines and, the further you went, into your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Each restart, like every mile, pushes it deeper.
Pull in safely — that's the next step — then turn it off. Exit by the next junction — not the services beyond — if you're on the M62, under 3 miles from Knowl. Restarting it to check gets nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear itself. Ring us and say how far you drove.
A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?
A week back, it was unknown to you. The AdBlue filler sits right beside the diesel one, which you didn't know, since your own vehicle either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Across West Yorkshire, nobody is safe from it.
In short: an extra step on top of the cases above, and those turn on whether it has run. Plenty of hire and company agreements want the owner to approve work on the car.
What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before our engineers turn up than after. Hanging on for a reply in the car park outside Mirfield, or beside Zion Baptist Church? Keep your car off meanwhile.
Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Knowl?
At times the honest answer is "I think so". Lighter, the bottle; a trace of ammonia near your filler; a hazy recollection of which cap. Look familiar? It might have been at a friend's driveway in Mirfield, or in a rush by Battyeford CofE (VC) Primary School at the school run.
The point: the engine isn't hurt by a little AdBlue splashed around the filler. Inside the diesel tank, however, AdBlue harms it. You can't tell which by turning the key, and doing so will pull in any AdBlue that is in the tank.
Next: act as though it went in, then keep the engine off. Tell us what you saw on your phone. A clear tank looked at is a better result than a run one emptied.
What each AdBlue drain around Knowl has in common
Whichever scenario you are in, the job starts the same way. Anywhere your car is — The Wasps Nest's car park, a road beside Mirfield Community Centre, a driveway, a forecourt — our van arrives and we ask about the liquid, the quantity, plus if the engine has been run. Answers set the work; the price comes on the call whilst nobody has left yet.
A thorough flush follows this drain. With petrol it's standard; with AdBlue it is essential, because crystals build up and certain metals corrode, and neither washes away unaided. Clean diesel is put in after the filter is flushed or replaced, and your car is finally tested. Most unrun vehicles are a half-hour job after the moment we get there.
Starting it comes last. With clean diesel in, it runs while our engineers confirm it is running properly, and then we go. Long-term damage is very uncommon if it's caught quickly, and the whole job is done where the vehicle is. Payment is on the day, never upfront. For the insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. Check your insurance before we're en route: cover for misfuelling comes included in plenty of policies.
