Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Laigh Park

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition too. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it is sucked through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Laigh Park, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has run. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Laigh Park, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, take the keys away.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.
  • Call right where you are. Say a PA3 4 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Never:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way up Abercorn Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Moving your car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Laigh Park forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out. No part in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It drops, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from. A vehicle filled on a drive in Paisley overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when the engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there. It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it is cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. A vehicle left sitting around Laigh Park with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Laigh Park

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, so watering it won't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Williamsburgh or the heart of Laigh Park equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Renfrewshire your car is sitting.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Laigh Park: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, because the dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken in. Someone tips the container in at home, just off Smith's Lane, as the day ends. Otherwise, in dim light by Old Swan, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a new motor, a fleet motor, or the other vehicle of a home with both fuel types — the cars people use least. Wherever in Renfrewshire, Laigh Park included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

Laigh Park: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Fountain Gardens or halfway across Laigh Park. When safe, pull over and turn everything off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

Laigh Park sits under a mile from the M8; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, so driving for Glasgow, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Laigh Park to the car park by Royal British Legion. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's caught early.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Laigh Park

Anywhere it has stopped around Laigh Park — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by labyrinth — our van comes to your vehicle. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if your engine has run, because those answers settle this work.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through because what remains will not wash out by itself. After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a check of the vehicle. Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Last, the system is bled with fresh diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Paisley Gilmour Street or on a drive around Laigh Park. We confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving. We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

A mobile service suits Laigh Park, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the car to us, since our technicians drain it there, on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Laigh Park?

Each job differs, and so no single quote is fair. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Wallneuk North Church.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, every call from Laigh Park begins with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if the engine ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Check your policy whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
