AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Lane Head, and What to Do Next

One fact matters above all once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is whether your motor has run since. If it has not, keep it that way, whether your car is around Lane Head itself or out in Causeway Foot. Normally this means draining and properly purging it right there around Lane Head — and so keep your key and motor off then ring 0333 366 0103. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.

Wherever around West Yorkshire it happened, one of the cases below fits yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Lane Head forecourt

Picture it: stood by the pump, gripping the bottle, you spot the filler you took off was not the correct one. Perhaps you are at the Gulf, perhaps at the Star Garage, maybe somewhere else around Lane Head.

Put simply: no better spot to be to discover it. Still inside that tank, and no fuel pulled onwards: that's where the AdBlue is.

Clearing the pump is no excuse to start it — and so do not get back in. Get the attendants to help pushing it into a bay, save the receipt, then phone us from there. Our equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt, and so a car that cannot be pushed away is emptied where it is at the petrol pump.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Lane Head

Days had passed with the dash light on. Picked up a bottle, tipped it in outside the house, binned the empty — and at that point looked at the cap a second time, after the fact. Homes just off Lane Head Lane are hit as much as anywhere else.

Meaning? As long as the vehicle hasn't been driven since, it is close to the forecourt case. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of the tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Your move: the keys indoors, and so no one takes the vehicle off at breakfast. Then, ring. Our technicians drain the car on your drive, whether that's around Lane Head or out in Kirkburton. Our pumping kit runs quietly enough that it won't wake the neighbours at night.

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving around Lane Head?

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power or a lit dashboard started a short way beyond the fill. School Hill, perhaps, or the way to Wakefield — a run of under 10 miles.

The upshot: the system has drawn AdBlue in already. The injection pump and every injector get it too on a bigger trip, after your filter and pipework have had it. More driving, more starts: further it travels.

What to do: pull over where it is safe and switch off. Exit by the first junction — not the services further along — if you are on the M62, under 10 miles from Lane Head. It won't have cleared, and so there's no sense restarting to check. Roughly what distance had it go? Say so as you phone.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company cars

It's a motor you have had for a week. The AdBlue filler is right next to the diesel one, which you did not know, since your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Any driver, wherever around West Yorkshire, might make it.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it's run, with one more step. The owner often has to sign off any work, under many rental and fleet contracts.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is faster settled before we arrive than after. If you are stranded in the car park at Shepley, or by All Hallows, while you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Lane Head?

Truthfully, the only answer might be that you think so. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia around the filler, and you can't remember which cap you took off. A rushed top-up by the gates of Kirkburton CofE (VA) First School, or a call to a friend in Highburton: both fit.

The upshot: your engine isn't hurt by some AdBlue spilled around the outside. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. Turning on the vehicle will not tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in your tank it will pull it in.

Do this: act as though it did, and don't start your motor. Call us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out free of AdBlue than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Lane Head AdBlue drain

Whichever scenario you are in, the job starts the same way. Three things come once our engineers arrive — on a forecourt, a driveway, a road beside Kirkburton Library or the car park at Junction Inn: the fluid, the quantity, and if the motor has been started. Replies shape the job; the quote follows on the call whilst nobody has set off yet.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush — more important after urea than with petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't clear on their own, no matter how long it sits. Clean diesel is put in after the filter has been flushed or replaced, and your car is finally checked. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Starting the engine comes last. Our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel before we go. Long-term damage is very unusual when it is noticed early, and the entire job is done where your car is. Payment is on the day, never in advance. For your insurer, you get a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer. Worth remembering: many insurers include misfuelling cover, so a quick look at your documents while we travel pays.
