AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Langney? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and leave the ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. In Langney, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Langney: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BN23 7, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Do not:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it's wasted.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along The Rising.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

On a forecourt around Langney, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump. On that drive, the vehicle stays just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. Denser than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very spot the pickup sucks from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Crumbles last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it's removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car sitting in Langney. Just inside the tank, it stays the same. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have a problem of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it splits back out — and the next fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Langney or out in Westham, does more harm than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around East Sussex the car is sitting.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Langney: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light. A bottle picked up while heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Langney Primary Academy. After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway near Appledore Close. Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Martello Inn.

Hired cars, new motors, company vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most. An identical slip, an identical first step — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Langney or the rest of East Sussex.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Langney?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Via your filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

You may see your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Sevenoaks Park or halfway across Langney. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M23, under 50 miles from Langney, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Langney to the car park by Langney Shopping Centre is one matter; driving towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop. When it is noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Langney

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street beside Saint Richard, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Langney, and our van travels to it. What was put in, about the quantity, and if the motor has turned over: our engineers check before all else, because those decide the work.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than for petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel. You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Langney or in a space outside Pevensey & Westham. Before we go, we make sure it's running correctly with new diesel in. Because the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Langney and East Sussex: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the BN postcode area, the teams taking AdBlue jobs around Langney reach much of East Sussex as well, Langney Village, St Anthonys Hill and Friday Street included. Ring and check instead of guessing when you are close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

A van that comes to you suits Langney, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring your car to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, in a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Langney?

Each job is different, so not one fixed price is honest. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Priory Lane.

Before any figure, not afterwards, each call from Langney opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran. Once they are known, a range turns into one fixed figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.
