AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Laughton Common? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts till the motor pulls it through. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Laughton Common. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Laughton Common: the first few minutes

Do:

  • So nobody can switch your ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting S25 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Never:

  • Moving your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so leave it off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance up Outgang Lane.
  • Draining your tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

On a forecourt around Laughton Common, whether it's the JET or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the petrol pump. At home, your car stays just where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out. Nothing inside an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — quite different from fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same place the intake sucks from. A car topped up on a driveway in Throapham overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; and, because it eats at some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a vehicle parked around Laughton Common. Just inside your tank, it stays stable. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting inside the tank, it causes none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It can't just be run through, because it does not burn. Deposits and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so watering it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Slade Hooton or the heart of Laughton Common equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around South Yorkshire the car has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Laughton Common: how it ends up there

Many cars put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two may look identical. Nobody means it. It mostly takes place at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Laughton Junior and Infant School the top-up is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Barrow Way. Otherwise, in dim light outside The Gallows, your vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuel types — the cars drivers use the least. Keep it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Laughton Common or the rest of South Yorkshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Laughton Common, and your engine started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Dinnington Community Woodland or halfway across Laughton Common. When safe, pull over and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of that through.

Laughton Common lies under 3 miles from the M18; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Laughton Common to the car park by St John's Church is a very different job from a run towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. Permanent damage is very unusual when it's caught quickly.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Laughton Common: what it takes

A street by Castle Hill, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped around Laughton Common, our technicians travel to it. Three answers decide the work, and so first our engineers ask what got in, roughly the amount, plus whether the motor has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. What remains from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last. Whether it is a parking bay at Kiveton Park or a drive in Laughton Common, that is where our technicians start the engine and you set off. It is checked on new diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we go. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Laughton Common: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same. What moves the price is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Laughton All Saints Church.

What went in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Laughton Common enquiry opens with exactly that, before any quote, not afterwards. Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
