Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lawkholme: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. In Lawkholme, catching it before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot. The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Lawkholme and Eastwood carry, with diesel for the motor. Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often. The slip lives in that gap.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Lawkholme?

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off East Avenue before work, or in the car park at The volunters on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Lawkholme or out in Showfield.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Keighley or a forecourt in Lawkholme.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.
  • Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.
  • The handbook says which it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Keighley.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Lawkholme Lane.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Finish once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through the built-in spout.
  • Close the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there. Skip step five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lawkholme?

Brief order, then. First: the motor remains unstarted. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Texaco or another — the staff will normally help push the car away, if you ask. If you are on your own drive in Lawkholme, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. Lawkholme sits under 10 miles from the M606; there, take the first exit. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Lawkholme is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards Bradford, and so say.

What takes place when our engineers arrive around Lawkholme

Our van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near TK Maxx, or outside Eastwood Community School. Those answers determine the work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run. You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly. Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears out unaided, no matter how long it is left. A test is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed. After that our engineers start it and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after we arrive, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
