Layters Green: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the motor off then leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Layters Green, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has been run. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Layters Green, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

  • Pocket your keys, and that stops someone turning the power on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SL9 8, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.
  • Even a short stretch along Leachcroft is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

At a forecourt in Layters Green, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle clear of the pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Jordans overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it is cleared from the system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. Lines carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked around Layters Green. Just inside that tank, it stays stable. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate kind of harm.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have an issue of thin fuel. Harm only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left in the tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Wilton Park or the centre of Layters Green alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Buckinghamshire the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Layters Green

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Chalfont St Peter Infant School the top-up is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Pond Lane. One more version: darkness, the car park by The Jolly Farmer, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels. Wherever you are around Layters Green or the rest of Buckinghamshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Layters Green: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Grove Wood, or part way across Layters Green, your motor may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M40, under 3 miles from Layters Green, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Layters Green to park near Chalfont Leisure Centre and a drive of under 15 miles for St Albans are very distinct jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Permanent damage is very rare if it's spotted quickly.

Layters Green: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Layters Green: a side street near Jordans Quaker Meeting House, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the work, so first we ask which fluid went in, about the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding the system with clean diesel comes at the end. You drive off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Layters Green or in a bay at Seer Green & Jordans. Our engineers check it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Layters Green: the cost of fixing it

Not one flat figure could be fair, because each job is different. Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Latimer Minster.

Before any figure, not after, each call from Layters Green opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus whether the engine ran. When they are known, a range turns into a single firm figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
