Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Leadenhall: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103. In Leadenhall, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands. Here in advance? In that case what follows covers why it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many newer diesels on the roads round Leadenhall and Peartree Bridge carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap. Diesel gets filled on every filling station visit, again and again. Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Leadenhall

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off V7 Saxon Street before work, or in the car park outside The Eagle on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on. Fishermead or the middle of Leadenhall: it is the same few seconds either way.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Netherfield or a forecourt in Leadenhall, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.
  • Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Milton Keynes Central? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in Buckinghamshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Golden Drive.
  • Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found the filler and read it.
  • Both behind a single flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Don't carry on to step five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Leadenhall?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Esso, ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump. On your own drive around Leadenhall? So the vehicle stays where it is.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off. On the M1, under 3 miles from Leadenhall, that means the next exit. A short hop across Leadenhall is a smaller job than a run towards Milton Keynes, under 3 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

What occurs when our technicians get there in Leadenhall

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Falconhurst School, near Milton Keynes Muslim Association or on your own driveway. Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set both work and price. Nobody heads out before you've had the quote by phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of your car. After that our technicians start it and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians are there. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
