Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Leigh Beck

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when your pump begins drawing it. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully flushed where the car stands around Leigh Beck. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Leigh Beck, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a SS8 7 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Never do these:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.
  • Even a short stretch up High Street is too far to drive it.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

At a forecourt around Leigh Beck, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car away from the pump. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. From a separate tank it goes straight to the exhaust, treating what the motor emits. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A car filled on a drive in Winter Gardens yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight around Leigh Beck leaves things worse. Inside your tank alone, time costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole issue. No harm is done while it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only when your engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Canvey Village or the centre of Leigh Beck equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Anywhere across Essex your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Leigh Beck: how it ends up there

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it. Mostly it's never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill is rushed outside Leigh Beck Junior School, because the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Seaview Road. Else, in dim light by The Windjammer, your car gets topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to an identical slip, wherever around Leigh Beck or the rest of Essex you happen to be.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Leigh Beck?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Through the filter, along the lines, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may appear, perhaps midway across Leigh Beck or returning from Kismet Park. When safe, pull over and turn it off — with no turning it on again to see. More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M2, under 15 miles from Leigh Beck, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why crossing Leigh Beck to park near St Anne, Canvey Island and a drive of under 5 miles towards Southend-on-Sea are such separate jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the motor has been run. When it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Leigh Beck

Anywhere it has come to rest around Leigh Beck — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Castle Point Transport Museum — our van comes to the vehicle. Which fluid got in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run: our engineers ask first, since those decide the job.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear away by itself. Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the vehicle. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the motor has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Lastly, your system is primed with fresh diesel. You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Leigh Beck or in a bay outside Leigh-on-Sea. It's tested on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers leave. No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Leigh Beck

Each job differs, so not one fixed quote would be honest. Three things shift the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind The Brockwell Stadium.

What got in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Leigh Beck call begins by asking precisely that, before a quote, never afterwards. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
