Liden: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: if your engine has run since it went in. Not started yet? Then keep it like that, wherever your vehicle sits — Liden or Badbury Wick. Switch nothing on, ring 0333 366 0103, and expect a proper flush after a drain, done right where your vehicle stands around Liden. Already started? Pull over once you safely can, then switch it off. A larger job, yes, yet the identical first step.

Find the scenario below that matches yours, wherever around Wiltshire it happened.

Liden forecourt: AdBlue in a diesel at the pump

You are at the pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. It could be the BP, or perhaps the Shell, or another forecourt in Liden.

The upshot: of all places to find out, the forecourt is the best. The AdBlue is in the tank and nowhere else. Nothing has drawn it in.

Clearing the petrol pump is no reason to run it — and so do not get back in. Ask the staff to help you push the car into a parking space, keep the receipt or the bottle, then phone us from the forecourt. The equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a live forecourt, so a vehicle that cannot be pushed away is cleared right at the pump.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Liden

On your dash, a warning had shown for days. A bottle bought at the garage, emptied in at the driveway — and it was just at the bin that the cap got a second look. Houses just off Liden Drive get hit as much as everywhere else.

The point: zero miles since leaves this almost as good to spotting it at the petrol pump. As it is reluctant to blend, AdBlue settles to the base inside the tank and stays. A night standing changes none of that.

Next: keys in the house, so no one takes your vehicle off first thing. After that, phone. Your drive is where it is drained, be it around Liden or Eldene. Night-time drains beside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.

Drove off with AdBlue in a diesel around Liden?

Rough running, smoke, lost power or a glowing dashboard arrived a mile or two after the top-up. Snodshill, say, or the route towards Oxford — a run of under 25 miles.

The point: your system has pulled AdBlue through already. Through your filter, along the pipework, and — the further the distance — on into the injection pump and every injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Next: find a sensible spot, stop, then turn the motor off. On the M4, under 3 miles from Liden, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Do not restart it to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Tell us know the distance covered as you call.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

It is a motor you have had for a week. Your own vehicle either does without AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, and so nothing told you the AdBlue inlet sits right next to the diesel. Wherever you are in Wiltshire, every driver can be caught.

What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. Many hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on the vehicle.

Settling it before the van arrives is faster, and so ring the rental company or your fleet manager, and then us. If you are stuck in the car park outside Swindon, or by Liden Community Centre, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the car off.

Liden: unsure if it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Now and then, "I think so" is all you can honestly say. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia round the filler, and you cannot remember which cap you took off. A rushed top-up by the gates of Liden Academy, or a call to a friend in Lawn: either fits.

What it means: a little spilled around the filler does no harm to the motor. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. Starting your car cannot tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in the tank it would draw it in.

Assume it got in, and never turn your key. Ring and give what you saw: we would rather find a clean tank than empty one once the engine has run.

What every AdBlue drain in Liden has in common

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Wherever the vehicle is — The Liden Arms's car park, a street by St. Timothy's Church, a driveway, a forecourt — our van gets there and asks about the fluid, the quantity, plus whether the motor has been run. The price comes on the call, ahead of anyone setting off, and those replies shape the work.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush — more vital with urea than after petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't clear by themselves, however long you wait. Then comes the filter — cleaned, or swapped when necessary — then clean diesel, and a test of your vehicle. Most unstarted cars are a half-hour job from the moment our technicians get there.

The final step is starting it. Before our technicians head off, it's checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel. When it is caught quickly, the vehicle very seldom has long-term damage, and the whole job takes place where it is. Paying comes on the day, never in advance. For the insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Being a residential suburb, Liden shares its vans with the nearby towns — Dorcan, Coate — right through SN postcodes. A postcode starting SN3 6 is the quickest way to tell us where you are.

No towing is needed, whether stopped in the centre of Liden or in a layby heading to Lordsmith Green, and so leave it put. The van drains it in place. If you are somewhere hard to explain, near Liden Library or close to a boundary, ring and ask rather than assuming.
