Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lidgett Park: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103. Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Lidgett Park. Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Not one fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Lidgett Park and Roundhay carry, with diesel feeding your engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

There is a filler on each tank. Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly. Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between them.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lidgett Park: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Lidgett Place, perhaps outside The Thomas Osborne on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new car.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Lidgett Park or out in Park Villas.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Lady Wood or a forecourt in Lidgett Park, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
  • Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook says where it is if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at Burley Park's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, use this routine.

  • Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by North Park Avenue on the verge.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Skip stage five altogether.

Lidgett Park: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the ASDA Fuel or the BP, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive around Lidgett Park? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The next junction is the place to come off when you are on the A64(M), under 3 miles from Lidgett Park. About how far did it go? Crossing Lidgett Park is less work than a trip of under 3 miles to Leeds, and so tell us.

What takes place when our technicians get there in Lidgett Park

By Moor Allerton Hall Primary School, close to Lidgett Park Methodist Church or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it. Those replies determine the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run. You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle is tested. Before we go, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
